COLLECTOR'S NOTES

The Story

You could walk straight past it. Rusty Shears sits below and behind a Grade II listed building on Silver Street, reached through a small courtyard — tucked away off the beaten track, and all the better for it.

Inside, it is a cabinet of curiosities that happens to serve lunch: Victoriana and interesting curios, mismatched furniture, shelves of teapots — and along one wall, more than 150 gins standing in front of botanical wallpaper.

Out back, the sheltered courtyard is the locals' secret, shaded by a fig tree. Dogs are welcome, the cakes are home made, and the teas are speciality. This is a tea room that grew a gin bar — not the other way round.

TRIPADVISOR
2025 / 2026
FIELD NOTE № 01 — Ian Ratcliffe — TRIPADVISOR, Oct 2025

Been twice whilst here on holiday this week, first visit, I had fortunes kippers, fantastic as always, my wife had eggs Royal, she loved it. … Every time we come to Whitby, we always visit here, its a quirky place with very friendly staff and excellent food.

FIELD NOTE № 02 — Valerie C — TRIPADVISOR, Nov 2025

We were staying nearby and called here for lunch. We were soaked, as it was a very wet day, but we were immediately made very welcome by our lovely waitress. We had delicious homemade soup, followed by coffee and a slice of the amazing Matilda cake. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. There was a lively atmosphere due to a musical event. I would definitely recommend a visit.

FIELD NOTE № 03 — Alan D — TRIPADVISOR, Dec 2025

Our first time at the Rusty Shears. We had breakfast. Coffee and Haggis with tattie scone, poached egg and whisky sauce (who'd have thought you could get haggis in Yorkshire. It was excellent (and I know my haggis!). The place is tucked away off the beaten track. A hidden gem that's worth discovering. We will be back, I'm sure.

FIELD NOTE № 04 — Matthew Buckley — TRIPADVISOR, Oct 2025

We returned to Rusty Shears for our second time looking to recreate our proposal weekend! We love the vibe of the place with the mismatched but quirky decor and the delicious breakfast items! I can highly recommend the Rusty Stack especially if you're hungover and need a little pick me up!

FIELD NOTE № 05 — Richard D — TRIPADVISOR, Apr 2026

Thankfully my Daughter spotted this Restaurant when we visited The Great Goth Shop. The Food and Customer Service was great! One of the things we loved also is that one of the Waitresses looks like Jaimie Lee Curtis!
